JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. -- Protesters used the shopping holiday to let their voices be heard, staging a number of demonstrations outside Walmart stores across the country. A small group of community members gathered at the store in Johnson City, calling for better wages and working conditions for Walmart employees.

Despite the low turnout, they felt it was important to show their solidarity for the cause.

"For too long they have ignored the issues of Walmart workers, for too long they've kept the pay and benefits low. They've kept the hours low to keep people on food stamps so Walmart workers and their allies like us want to see some changes for the better," said Lee Conrad, Broome-Tioga Federation of Labor President.

Members of the Occupy Elmira/Corning movement also held a similar protest.
