Charles Dickens' “A Christmas Carol” has come alive on the streets of Skaneateles. Friday, the Dickens' Christmas festival kicked off its 19th year with performances, food and visits with Father Christmas. Our Candace Hopkins caught up with the beloved characters who will make the village their home through the holiday season.

SKANEATELES, N.Y. -- Once upon a time, the Christmas season was about more than just hitting the mall.

"Christmas is a time when men and women open their shut up hearts freely and share the love of humanity with each other," said Charles Dickens.

And hundreds gathered in Skaneateles to bring that spirit back to life.

"It's all about creating the magic of Christmas again and all of our guests really enjoy the hot chocolate from the Girl Scouts and roasted chestnuts, free carriage rides, it's very festive for everyone," said John and Amanda Packwood.

Children were eager to pass along their wish lists, while others browsed for gifts and took in some music. And even the spirits got into the spirit.

"Now in death I've taken on new things, such as creating joy wherever I go. I found that to be a little more uplifting for the holidays," said The Ghost of Jacob Marley.

While there is Christmas cheer everywhere you turn, we did find one person who wasn't very happy about all of these festivities.

"Having spirits, buying things, laughing, singing, bah, I hate it all," said Mr. Scrooge.

But despite Mr. Scrooge's best efforts to ruin the celebrations, they continue each weekend through December 23rd.
