NEW YORK STATE -- With winter quickly approaching, it is important to keep in mind driving safety.

Although last year was one of the warmest winters we've seen, we will likely have colder temperatures and more snow this year.

The New York State Department of Transportation is beginning to prepare for the upcoming season. The DOT urges drivers to make sure their vehicles are ready for winter and to always check road conditions before traveling. One of their biggest reminders for drivers is to stay clear of plows.

"All we ask is people stay back. If they stay back, let us clear the road, get a good layer of material down, then they'll have a nice clear road so they can get to work," said NYSDOT Highway Maintenance Worker Rick Martinez.

"Our trucks travel no more than 35 miles per hour. Now that's whether they're on an expressway or on a two-lane roadway," said Charles Morgante, NYSDOT Region 5 Operations Director.

Being aware of plows on the road is just part of being a safe winter driver.
