ALBANY, N.Y. -- The newest four legged members of The New York State Police have officially earned their places in the squad.

Twelve dogs and their handlers graduated from the Basic Canine Handler School in Albany Tuesday. All of the dogs are named after Troopers killed in the line of duty, including two local officers.

K-9 "Doyle" is named for Trooper William Doyle, who was shot in killed while pursuing a stolen car in 1967. And K-9 "Mandin" was named in honor of Trooper Amanda Anna. Trooper Anna was killed an on-duty car crash in Hastings in May.

All of the pairs underwent 20 weeks of training in many areas, including obedience, drug detection and searches.

"The dog is great for tracking. They run in a wooded area, you get your dog on lead and go track that person, the missing child or the suspect,” New York State Trooper Eric Van Bramer said.

With the addition of these 12 dogs, the State Police now have 74 canine teams.
