CORNING, N.Y. -- A Steuben County school district is beginning to look at ways to merge marching bands as part of a larger transition.

The Corning-Painted Post district is mapping out ideas on how to merge the Corning East and Corning West High School's marching bands. Administrators say both high schools have large marching bands with active parent support groups. Leaders are closely looking at ways to keep approximately 500 students actively involved in the program.

"What's being presented is the idea of two marching bands and one being a performance band and one being a competition band, which really kind of reflects the culture of both existing high schools right now. East High is a competitive band. West High is what they refer to as a show band," said Superintendent Mike Ginalski.

Eventually, the entire music program will be transitioned into one.

In 2014, the district will have one high school and one middle school.
