ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- If you have some old cell phones lying around, you can use them to help servicemen and women serving overseas this holiday season.
Cell Phones for Soldiers is once again taking donations. The used phones are collected and recycled.
Money raised from the phones is used to buy international calling cards. The average phone converts to two, 60-minute cards.
Officials say it's a great morale boost for the troops, and it's important for their families back home as well.
Lt. Col. Hugh Darville, Syracuse Army Recruiting Battalion Commander, said, "It's incredibly important to them to know that their son or daughter or husband who is serving overseas can call back and let them know that they're safe."
If you're interested in donating, there are 15 drop-off boxes around Onondaga County and two in Auburn.
