ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick says New York should act now and legalize marijuana. In a letter to the Albany Times Union, Myrick urged lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana.

Myrick says the vast majority of New Yorkers support it and sick people shouldn't be forced to decide between dangerous prescription pills and breaking the law to feel better.

Medical marijuana is currently legal in 18 states, and Myrick says New York should not be among the last states to reform and provide empathy for its patients. Myrick goes on to say New York should further look into legalizing marijuana all together and that he has directed Ithaca police to focus on other issues that more effectively protect the public.
