SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A project three years in the making is moving closer to completion. Crews are continuing the demolition of the old Kennedy Square housing complex on East Water Street to make way for the SUNY Upstate and SUNY ESF biotechnology research center.

Demolition of the complex started in the summer 2009 when it was closed down because of financial problems. SUNY Upstate bought the 14-acre property and broke ground on the $22 million project that same year.

The center's construction was delayed after waiting for state funding. It isn't set to be open for at least another few months.
