Third arrest in connection with lottery scam

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse man is charged with helping his two sons scam a man out of a five-million dollar lottery ticket.

According to the Post-Standard, 56-year-old Nayef Ashkar was arrested earlier in the week on conspiracy charges.

Askhar's sons Andy and Nayel are accused of scamming a customer out of a five-million dollar winning ticket by saying it was only worth five-thousand dollars.

Police say the scam happened back in 2006 at the Green Ale Market, which is owned by a family member. According to investigators, six years later the brothers planned to illegally claim the actual prize money from the State Lottery.

Andy is charged with first degree criminal possession. Nayel is charged with first degree attempted grand larceny. They are scheduled to stand trial in April.
