SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Christians across the region gathered for Christmas Eve services to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

This Mass was at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. Leaders say, in light of recent events, it's an important time for a celebration.

"This Christmas especially we need this celebration because of the darkness of Connecticut, the problems with Hurricane Sandy and now today in Rochester, the shooting of four firemen and the death of two of them. We desperately need Christmas,” Monsignor Neal Quartier said.

Several Christmas carols were performed during the service.
