Bowling in the Bronx: SU football team visits 9-11 Memorial
The SU Football team made a visit Thursday to the 9-11 Memorial as part of its trip to New York City for the Pinstripe Bowl. The team is participating in numerous events this week to showcase the University to the metropolitan area. And as Brad Vivacqua tells us, visiting the memorial is something some of these players have never had the chance to do.
SU defensive lineman and Queens native Jay Bromley was only 10 years old during the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.
"When I was a little kid I didn't really understand, you just understood buildings taken down, and things like that. But as I got older, seeing on the names makes you think back."
Thursday, Bromley joined his SU teammates as they toured the 911 memorial and museum.
The names of close to 3,000 killed in the 9-11 attacks are inscribed in bronze panels surrounding two water pools set in the footprints of the Twin Towers.
The names include those perished at the World Trade Center site, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania aboard Flight 93, and at the Pentagon.
Unlike Jay Bromley, many of the SU players have never had the chance to experience a visit here to the 9-11 Memorial. That's why this trip holds a special significance with the team.
"It really is an interesting and emotional experience to be at a place like this," said Macky MacPherson, center. "To be at the 9-11 Memorial, eleven years later after the towers fell and it really is an emotional experience."
And an experience these players will always remember.
"Everyone that has an opportunity to come here now, from Florida, California, and never had the opportunity that lived through those moments too, to see the hard work people put to make sure those people are never forgotten, they're always remembered that went through that tragedy," Bromley said.
A tragedy that won't ever be forgotten.
The memorial also honors six people killed in the World Trade Center Bombing in 1993.
The Orange will take on West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
