SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Monday is the sixth day of Kwanzaa. On Sunday, people gathered at Bethany Baptist Church to celebrate the holiday.

The holiday is an African American based holiday which takes traditions from African harvest festivals.

Children stood up and represented each one of the seven principles of the celebration. Organizers say it's an important lesson for children.

"Kwanzaa is an affirmation of family, community and faith. And it teaches principles about working together, how to believe in yourself and how to support your community in ways that are very easy to do," said George Kilpatrick, organizer.

Tuesday is the final day of Kwanzaa. Typically, families get together on New Year's and enjoy a feast.
