Syracuse makes decision on parking meters

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It may be a temporary solution, but the city of Syracuse has come up with a plan that will keep its parking meters from becoming obsolete.
The company that operates the data network for the pay stations recently announced it was ending its service. Syracuse leaders looked into replacing the meters, but instead decided to purchase 270 new modems at a cost of $250 each.
Mayor Stephanie Miner says that with so many future parking options, the city didn't want to make a huge investment that could quickly be outdated.
"There's been a tremendous revolution in technology particularly when it comes to parking. Other cities and other places have benefited from that. We want to see that Syracuse does that as well," said Miner.
The cost of privatizing the parking meters would have added up to over $650,000 a year. The city should receive the new modems in the next month.
