ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- In order to meet the growing demand for healthier lunches on strict federal monetary guidelines, local school nutrition professionals are coming together to work toward better meals for students.

Nutritionists attended a food show Wednesday hosted by the New York School Nutrition Association to taste test and purchase new foods for school lunches.

In July 2012, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act took effect, implementing strict regulations which in turn, called for big changes for the coming school year. The NYSNA Executive Director says that introducing the new lunch choices may be difficult for students.

"Sometimes it's a hard sell because kids aren't used to it. They're used to choosing whatever they want for school meals. And this is something new that they have to do," said Carol Beebe, Executive Director for the New York School Nutrition Association.

The new regulations call for students to take a fruit or vegetable every day, stick to whole grains, low fat milk and low sodium meals.
