ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The future of a Chemung County nursing facility is up in the air.

Employees of the Chemung County Skilled Nursing Facility met with county leaders Wednesday. The private meetings allowed for the discussion of different options the facility faces in the future.

One option up for consideration is privatization, something the facility nurses say they do not support.

County Executive Tom Santulli says that the despite the facility's deficit, they are mindful of keeping it under county control.

"We do not want to get into the situation that many counties did. They let the problem get so bad that the deficit continued to grow, the next thing it's a major problem and the next thing, you have a mess on your hands," Santulli said.

No decisions have been made regarding the facility's future, but Santulli does say they are talking to a consultant and considering a partnership with another health care facility, among other options.
