Flooding causes evacuations in Malone

Five homes have been evacuated in the Town of Malone due to flooding along the Salmon River. They sit on Lower Park Road which remains closed. And the situation could get worse. Our Barry Wygel tells us what homeowners are dealing with.

MALONE, N.Y. -- For Scott Lamica and his family, this flood is the worst they have ever seen.

"There's about four or five inches of water on the floors, just a lot of water," said Scott Lamica, a Malone resident.

It became clear Wednesday, the Salmon River was threatening flood.

"We put a lot of stuff upstairs, we got stuff up on blocks the best we can," said Lamica.

Town officials say they have known about the potential for flooding for years and they have tried to reach out to the state and federal government to fix it, but they have received no response.

"A lot of it was caused by the sediment released in 1997 from the Chasm Dam," said Howard Maneely, Malone Town Supervisor.

Malone Town Supervisor Howard Maneely says the sediment has worked its way down the river and in places where the river was once 20 feet, it is now only four or five feet.

"We're on a list to be fixed, but we never move on the list. We're caught in the middle," said Maneely.

Maneely says crews worked as hard as they could to try and protect the homes along the river.

"We sandbagged around two homes yesterday," said Maneely.

"You can look over there, it's over the top of them now," added Lamica.

But the cold temperatures Wednesday night caused more ice to back up and the water overran the sandbags. And the situation is still getting worse.

"It's not done with yet. You see going back toward the Village of Malone it's getting higher and higher," said Maneely.

The town is working to prevent further damage to homes, but says the only fix will be warmer temperatures.

Town officials have blocked off Lower Park Street and advise no one to drive or try to walk through the flooded area, even if it appears to be solid ice.
