BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- When hundreds of participants took steps for a local charity over the summer, little did they know how big of a stride they were making.

The Wendy's Walk for Kids was named the Champion's Tour Charity of the Year, earning it a $30,000 check from the PGA.

Representatives from the PGA presented the award at a dinner Wednesday evening. In its fourth year as the signature charity event at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, the walk raised more than $190,000 in 2012.

The money raised benefitted local non-profits including the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, YMCA and Broome County Catholic Charities.

"It's not an award the Wendy's Walk for Kids is receiving, it's not an award that the Dick's Sporting Good Open is receiving. It's an award that the Greater Binghamton community is receiving. We didn't distribute a $190,000 last year by ourselves," said Keli Cooper, Wendy’s Walk Coordinator.

The Dick's Sporting Goods open is scheduled for August 16th though the 18th. Wendy's Walk for Kids will take place at 5 p.m. the final day of the tournament.
