VESTAL, N.Y. -- Female athletes from around Southern Tier got a pep talk from a hall of fame gymnast Monday.
Binghamton University held its eighth annual Women's Athletics Luncheon, with Shannon Miller as the featured guest.
Miller is a two time Olympian who won five individual medals in the 1992 and 1996 games, including a gold for the balance beam. She later won a battle over cancer and she says that her message is one of overcoming life's obstacles.
"Overcoming injuries and other obstacles, I relied on those challenges and how to get through those challenges with my battle with cancer. I knew I had to rely on goal setting, I had to rely on a positive attitude and take those baby steps," Miller said.
BU held the event to celebrate the important roles of female athletes as well as to raise funds for scholarships.
