SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An annual campaign has begun to help feed the hungry in the Syracuse area.
A kickoff breakfast was held Friday morning at the Syracuse Salvation Army headquarters.
The Saint Patrick's Parade committee is encouraging food and monetary donations from now through March 9, parade day.
All canned food collected will be distributed to the Interreligious Food Consortium while monetary donations help the Food Bank of Central New York.
Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade President Janet Higgins said, "If there are any businesses that would like a barrel, they can go to our website, they can email, and we'll have a barrel delivered within a day or so. We're just so anxious to eradicate hunger in Central New York. And, that's one of the goals of the parade."
Higgins says there will be a special food collection night this Saturday at the Syracuse Crunch game.
