NEW ORLEANS, L.A. -- Energy officials in New Orleans have traced the cause of the power outage during Super Bowl XLVII to a faulty device.

The head of Entergy in New Orleans says an electrical relay device, installed to protect equipment at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the event of a cable failure, malfunctioned.

Officials aren't sure why the same device functioned properly during several events leading up to the big game, but failed in the second half of the Super Bowl.

The electrical outage delayed play between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens for 35 minutes.
