Pope Benedict XVI will resign at the end of the month. The pontiff made the announcement Monday morning during a meeting of Vatican cardinals. The news has surprised Catholics across the globe. YNN's Brad Vivacqua spoke with parishioners prior to Mass at Blessed Sacrament in Syracuse and has their reaction to the news.

CENTRAL NEW YORK -- The news of Pope Benedict's resignation surprised many Catholics in Central New York. Parishioners at Blessed Sacrament Monday had the pontiff in their thoughts and prayers.

"I'm sorry to hear about the Pope, but I'm sure it’s for a good cause. He's served us well," said Joanne Ciemba, Blessed Sacrament parishioner.

"I was just surprised. The first thought is that he might be sick. We don't know. Just surprised what else should I be," said Betty Garafalo, Blessed Sacrament parishioner.

Pope Benedict has said he plans to do a lot of reading and praying in his retirement.
