NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. -- Although the St. Lawrence Seaway is currently covered with ice, the busy shipping season is just around the corner.

The 2013 season will officially begin for Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 22nd.

The Seaway always closes for winter maintenance from late December through mid-March.

Last season saw a four percent increase in tonnage over 2011. This increase came even after low water limited loads and tonnage throughout areas of the system.
