UNITED STATES -- A land claim dispute involving the Oneida Indian Nation has been put on hold.

Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court delayed a decision on whether it will hear a case involving the Oneidas and whether the state is allowed to tax 300,000 acres of land that historically belonged to the tribe.

Over the years, the Oneidas have been slowly buying the land back and claim they don't have to pay taxes to state and local governments because it is protected by previous treaties.

Local governments disagree and have been threatening to foreclose on property owners.

Before the Supreme Court considers taking up the case, they have asked to hear from the U.S. solicitor general, who usually weighs in on any Indian-related matters.
