SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dozens flocked to Watkins Glen International to watch history be made at the Super Bowl of Nascar racing. Danica Patrick was the first woman to start the Daytona 500 in the pole position.

She also became the first woman to lead a lap of the Daytona 500 during green flag racing. Patrick finished in eighth place. There were plenty of Danica Patrick fans, but people were also supporting some of the other top drivers.

Safety was on everyone’s mind during the race. During the Nationwide Series race on Saturday, a car crashed into the fence, sending large chunks of debris, including a tire, into the grandstands. At least 28 people were injured.

“It looks like when the car is bumper to bumper, the car is more apt to break loose and cause a major accident,” said Nascar Fan Steven Shumway.

Local race fans will get their chance to see Nascar up-close this summer. The Nascar Sprint Cup series will visit Watkins Glen on Sunday August 11.
