LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Some tough choices lie ahead for the Liverpool School District. The numbers show a $9 million budget gap for the upcoming year.

Superintendent Dr. Richard Johns says the school's spending hasn't changed. The difference is a decrease in state funding and a $3.5 million increase in health and retirement costs. To make up part of the gap, the superintendent plans to take $2.9 million out of their fund balance. Johns says that still leaves them $6.4 million short.

"If we keep going the same path that we're currently on, it's gotten progressively worse and worse. We have to lay off more and more people, we've relied more and more on spending up our reserves and as several of the board members pointed out, that's financial doom," Johns said.

Dr. Johns has not proposed any major cuts to jobs or programs at this time. He says they are looking to shift the way business is done in programs and personnel while they wait to see if the state comes through with more funding.
