OGDENSBURG, N.Y. -- It has been five years since a murder has happened in the city of Ogdensburg. But that changed Thursday night when 83 year old Ralph Lawton was killed in his home.
"Three individuals entered the residence of these two male occupants and were attacked and it was a robbery situation that the actions resulted in the death of one of those individuals," said Ogdensburg Police Chief Richard Polniak.
Lawton was attacked in the kitchen of his Ford Street apartment. Police say Lawton and his roommate, Guy Bartlett, had let their attackers into their home.. But it is unknown if they knew the individuals at the door.
"They had many visitors at that location..there's other information that we're aware of that they expected somebody else at the door knocking," Polniak said .
Police believe the attack was drug related.. But is unknown how or if the victims were involved. Police wouldn't say if weapons were used.
"He suffered injuries to the chest area..That contributed to the, to his ultimate death," said Polniak.
Many people living on Ford Street expressed their concern, saying they never expected something like this to happen.. And a murder on their street will leave them locking their doors.
"We were having people breaking cars and stuff but not something like this. This hasn't happened in a long time..like a couple of years ago. But yeah, I am pretty shaken up," said April Pire.
Police are continuing to receive promising leads and information from witnesses. But at this point in time they have no suspects.
