The Maine community lost three children earlier this year as the result of two separate car accidents. Now, they're being honored at Maine Memorial Elementary School. Our Melissa Kakareka tells us what students are doing to remember their fellow classmates.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's been three months since seven-year-old Joshua Henry, six-year-old Tyler Houghton, and ten-year-old Taylor Estrella lost their lives in two separate car accidents in the town of Maine. But the memory of the three children still lives on in the community.

"The classrooms that the kids were in and even other classrooms, still talk of Josh and Tye all the time, they still write notes to them, so it's still really raw for most of us," said Jim Tokos, Maine Memorial teacher.

School officials held an assembly in honor of the children at Maine Memorial Elementary on Monday. Students showcased two ceiling tiles painted in honor of their classmates, and the school also unveiled three butterflies which have been placed in front of the building.

The school also rededicated its memorial garden, which began in 1993 for other students who passed away. For Taylor, Josh and Tye they added a butterfly bench as well as a new tree and new flowers.

"Every time they look out here it is a memory, and you get to see something that is pretty and something that grows, and get to walk over and look and spend time...when they come back 10 to 15 years from now they may see the garden and see the memory," said Jason Van Fossen, Maine-Endwell Superintendent.

School officials say all of the additions provide a way for students and faculty to cope with the loss.

"Instead of sitting back and being sad we're trying to take that energy and put it towards the good," said Tokos.

And help make sure the children are never forgotten.
